Today we have the pleasure to feature Victor, or @Selvedge1. He is truly one of the pioneers in creating the Instagram denim community. Social media is a tool where he can outlet his creativity, but more importantly, to create a community that brings like minds together. He is an irreplaceable figure in the denim community. Now... Enough from me, let's learn more about his story from himself!
How did you start Instagram?I started Instagram in Dec 2014. Things were a lot simpler back then.... remember when timelines were still chronological? I wanted to combine my love of photography with my niche interest of denim. I had been a long time lurker at Superfuture and Styleforum, but those forums never had the feeling of community that Instagram had.
What does social media/Instagram mean to you?As for what social media and Instagram means to me - it's an outlet for creativity and for bringing like minded people together. I've been really fortunate to meet up with around a hundred fellow Instagrammers around the world. Shout out to the @LADenimHangs group, along with so many other folks from SF, NY to Malaysia, Amsterdam, and Japan - for taking the step to hang. It's super cool to be able to nerd out with other denimheads in person, outside of the digital confines. In the end, the folks that share this bond also share other interests too.
Any interesting encounters through social media?I've gone on a few trips to Japan with Instagrammers, once with Greg (@denimhound) and once with @kevin.two @beingtian and @formulapfaff.
The LA crew has visited Austin (my home) and I've shown them an unforgettable weekend in Austin. So many more stories around the world you'll just have to ask me in person :)
What feelings do you have for "Made in Japan" jeans/fashion products?I'm a big fan of "MIJ (Made in Japan)" products because after visiting Japan, I can tell the attention to detail that the artisans put into the craft. They really care, and I see this passion infused in the products they produce. I've seen a variety of products and met industry folks in Japan. Jeans Street was eye-opening, thanks to the hospitality of @pallet_life_story.
